Northern Rockies

I just returned from a 5-day trip to the Northern Rockies...it was fantastic! I left from Fort Wayne, Indiana, on Thursday at Noon and drove straight to Glacier National Park in order to get there by sunset. I got some shots of St Mary lake as well as Swiftcurrent lake and some falls near Logan Pass. Glacier is an amazingly beautiful park and one of my personal favorites in the USA. Unfortunately, clouds socked in most of the higher elevations so I decided to head up to Banff for a day in hopes of better weather later.

After sunrise at Swiftcurrent lake I headed towards Canada and arrived in the Lake Louise area around 2pm. This is definitely a beautiful area although it seems to be suffering from serious overcrowding. I would have loved to get to more of the park, but was on a very limited schedule. I shot Moraine Lake for sunset and started heading back to Montana in hopes of better weather the next day. I arrived back in Glacier mid-morning and the weather remained the same at the higher elevations. It didn't look like it was going to clear up at all, so I made the decision to hoof it down to Wyoming to shoot the Tetons.

I arrived at Jenny Lake near sunset after having missed the pullout for Jackson Lake. The next morning I headed for Jackson Lake and found the spot I was looking for. As the sun came up I decided to head to Snake River Overlook and then eventually to the Moulton Barn after sunrise. This was it, I packed my gear and started heading east.

5 days and 5000 miles later, I arrived back in Leo. I'm pretty happy with some of the shots and hope to be posting them soon.

Updates

So it's been quite a while since my last post and I've uploaded the last 2 galleries a month or two ago now. I've also made 2 small trips, one to Great Smoky Mountains National Park as well as one to the north shore of Lake Superior. I haven't posted the images from these trips yet as I hope to get a "Recent Images" gallery online as well. I would also like to get a guestbook function running to get some idea of who is visiting the site. Finally, at the end of this week I will be driving out to Glacier NP in Montana for 4 days and am really excited about this trip. Stay tuned!

Recent Trips

I just finished up my second trip of the year. Back in February I got up to Seul Choix Point in Michigan's UP as well as Silver Lake Dunes. This last weekend I took 2 extra days off and hit New Mexico, one of my favorite states. It was a great trip overall, and I made it to White Sands National Monument as well as the Bisti Wilderness. I ran into some serious winter weather in Oklahoma, which slowed me down about 3 hours and rearranged my plans. Then, on my way back to Indiana, my car battery died, leaving me stranded for 4 hours. I hope to be able to post these images, as well as some others soon. The most time-consuming aspect of this is just sorting and cutting down the large number of photographs into a few galleries.

Website Redesign

As you can see, the current site design took some elements from both recent redesigns. I kept the darker background, however changed the font and added the gradient in the background. Hope you like it. With the general layout decided, hopefully I can get the galleries and other pages done.

Website Redesign Second Thoughts

I'm still not sure I'm happy with the current website layout. Below is what may be going up in place of the current site (dark brown/futura font). Slightly different feel I guess. The bg color has changed obviously, along with the font (trajan pro). Also, there is now a forest shot in the background with a gradient mask applied to it. We'll see....

Website Redesign

If you've visited the site in the last few months you've probably either been greeted with no page at all, or a non-working front page. I've finally got the main page and the gallery listing updated. Hopefully I can get the actual galleries online in the next few days. Also, there will be a lot of new images from Fall 09 trips. Hope you enjoy!

Home Page Image

I just switched out the image on the home page of the site to a recent photo from the Pacific NW trip. I found this location after a really crummy day prior to this one. I was excited at the possibilties with the rolling hills in the foreground and Mt Hood in the background. However, as I returned here for sunset, Mt. Hood had clouded over. I remained until past dusk just in case it cleared, but it never happened. I'm still pleased with this image, but having Mt. Hood in the background would have really made for a beautiful capture.

Pacific NW Trip

I just got back from my trip to Washington and Oregon last weekend. It was a fantastic trip filled with highs and lows and many spectacular places. I hope to be posting some images from the trip soon. I took just under 1000 pictures and am sorting through them now. I hope to have a couple dozen "keepers". I also hope to find the time to post a trip report/blog of the day to day activity. Check back here soon for updates!

New Galleries Online!

The Landscapes I and Nature I galleries are now online! Hope you enjoy them! A note on the Nature gallery: Landscapes are by far my favorite thing to photograph and are really the core focus of Resplendent Light. Nature images are something I take while hiking between locations or in my backyard or when the light isn't great, versus seeking them out on their own. I include them in my gallery because over time I have accumulated some that I really enjoy and I feel are worth sharing.

Notes on Image Captions

As I started going through various images adding titles and captions to them, I realized a bit of a limitation with the Lightroom web gallery that I am using to export. If the caption is a little lengthy, it expands the border around the picture to make it fit. This doesn't look so great, so for now I will have to settle for a pretty small description of the image. I have been putting in the location where the image was shot and not any technical details (when I have time, I'll make a post explaining why). I hope to find a way to post more detailed descriptions of these shots right in the gallery, but I may end up doing a sort of trip report on the News page whenever I post new images (after the initial galleries are online).

Site Updates

I hope to be able to publish a few more galleries to the site this weekend. Additionally, I am starting to go through and add titles and descriptions to many of the images. I removed a few images from the Favorites gallery, but also added a few that I'm not sure how I missed earlier. I am going to try to keep the number of images in each gallery at 40, so there are no more than 2 pages in each.

Gallery Page

The new gallery page is up, and the favorites gallery is online! All the other galleries are just placeholder images. When I get some more time, I would like to clean up the design just a bit and make a few small changes. Regarding the actual gallery itself, it was created in Lightroom pretty quickly. I have not had time to go through and add captions, titles to the images, but plan on doing so soon. When viewing photography sites, I enjoy reading about how the image was created. Hopefully I can get around to providing such detail to all my images. In the meantime, enjoy the gallery! The website is slowly coming together. Right now, I am working out the basic details on layout, fonts, etc. The main page is up, as well as a very early gallery page to test some ideas out on. In addition to these pages, the News page (this blog) will hopefully be updated more often. I will be working to get more pages up and get some content posted on them. Most importantly, I want to get the favorites gallery posted. I have a backlog of images from my summer and fall trips to go through that will take some time however. As fall ends and my shooting schedule slows down for Winter, hopefully I'll be able to make some good progress on the site.
